BACKGROUND

Soon after creating this web site, I received an e-mail from a Los Angeles cousin inquiring about our group setting up a DNA testing project. At the same time, PBS was presenting a series on the subject tracing the DNA of Egypt's Pharaohs. King Tutankhamen to be exact. The presentation was created by Professor Robert Woodward of Brigham Young University.

Woodward was allowed to extract a small piece of tissue from the mummy of "The Boy King" for DNA testing. With that information, he subsequently discovered a taxi driver in Cairo who is a direct descendant of the king. This illustrated to me that DNA testing works. Imagine tracing your lineage after three thousand years!

Bill Chinworth, Dr. Ugo Perego, Jon Egge,
Diahan Southard, and Pete Chenoweth meet
at Brigham Young University to establish
the Chenoweth DNA Project in 2001.

I contacted Jon Egge and Pete Chenoweth on the matter and in June 2001, we went to Provo and met with Dr. Ugo Perego and Diahan Southard on the matter of participating in the ongoing DNA Human Genome Project there. It was explained that our information wasn't needed for the BYU project but the work was about to spin off to the commercial side and the scientific apparatus was being set up to be of value to families and individuals interested in establishing a DNA data base. At the time of our meeting in Utah, Jon had developed a list of ninety plus people that would completely establish the ancestral lines of John Chenoweth and Mary Calvert from those cousins alive today.

Douglas R. Fogg

In August, 2002, Douglas Fogg, of Relative Genetics, came to Elkins, West Virginia, and presented the new Family Genetics Project. This is the project that we as the Chenoweth family are now engaged in. Diahan Southard will be at the reunion in Portland later in 2004 and will again present the results of the start of this project.

RELATIVE GENETICS

In every family tree there are questions about how far removed one person is from another or how two or more persons may be connected. Conflicting records or perhaps identical names with different dates and locations can often cause confusion. This is where genetic testing can help provide answers. Almost every genealogist knows that names change, places are not recorded and dates can be forgotten.

Relative Genetics is an international industry leader in DNA testing by offering some of the most extensive DNA services available. The company's vision transcends becoming the most dependable and extensive DNA testing facility in the world to becoming the standard against which all DNA testing providers will be measured. Relative Genetics strives to provide the perfect balance of quality, quickness, and convenience for a complete array of DNA testing services and products.

Chenoweth Family Reunion personnel immediately decided to start a family genetics project with the company. We want to now state that we wish Chenoweth cousins to use this company for DNA genealogy proofing and research. There are other companies providing this service. But, having the data in one program allows the project officer to broaden the range of information amongst all the cousins.

Pete Chenoweth

Pete Chenoweth has been in on the promulgation of the family genetics project since day one. Pete is not from the line of John Chenoweth and Mary Calvert so he's interested in fitting family lines together in a most earnest way. He has been associated with Jon Egge's genealogy web site for many years. It's Jon and Pete who have sought after and made the most valid corrections to our family's ancestry. Pete's life employment has been with the Medical Service Corps in the United States Army. Since he resided in Roy, Utah, it was doubly beneficial that he be appointed to be Project Officer for the Chenoweth Family Project.

(Perhaps it's a good idea to add this page to your list of bookmarks of favorite web sites since moving to the Relative Genetics site will close the surfing connection to the Chenoweth Reunion site.)

A Family Genetics Project requires a central contact person who will act as the Project Coordinator and work directly with Relative Genetics. The Project Coordinator may be selected by a family group or may volunteer on his/her own to start a study. Relative Genetics works directly with the Project Coordinator and has prepared easy to use tools to help him/her do a great job as group liaison. We provide resources that plan, initiate, manage and complete every step. Central to these tools is the Coordinator's Manual. Of course, the Relative Genetics professional training staff is always available for consulting or counseling as often as the Coordinator feels it is necessary. The other participants simply provide their information, a DNA sample and let Relative Genetics do all the work.

Purpose: While there are many different objectives that a family project may have, the purpose is generally the same: establish and verify biologic connections between many people in a related group. The specific objectives of the Chenoweth Family Projects are:

1. Determine links correctly in the first three or four generations since all the men are named Richard, John, Arthur, William or Thomas (Dick, Jack, Art, Bill or Tom);

2. Try to determine links to John Chenoweth's family in the United Kingdom and any other Chenoweth line;

3. Establish a mitochondrial DNA sequence among female cousins to prove the maternal lines from Mary Calvert mitochondria through her daughters, Hannah, Ruth, and Mary;

4. Assist all our lost cousins in tracing themselves into their places in the Chenoweth family.

To participate, visit the Relative Genetics web site and contact Pete Chenoweth by e-mail or write to 1045 Hancock Mill Lane, Hephzibah, GA 30815 to learn more.
